As part of the massive effort to get New Yorkers tested and vaccinated, dD+P was retained to take quick action in providing design and construction build-out services for COVID-19 training, testing, and vaccination sites that could ease pressure on the strained NYC healthcare system. A simple but important set of principles guided our emergency design-build process: responsive design solutions, maximizing physical comfort, and mitigating the spread of COVID-19. Each design incorporated social distancing, virus-conscious traffic patterns, privacy panels, and strategic furniture arrangements. This unparalleled endeavor involved design and collaboration between a wide range of local, state, and federal agencies including the US Army Corps of Engineers, FEMA, the National Guard, the NYS Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, the NYS Department of Health, and NYC Emergency Management. Due to the design-build nature of this project, we were able to finish designs within quick two-day turnarounds and managed to complete multiple vaccination sites. Throughout this process, dD+P was dedicated to learning quickly, adapting to client needs, and supporting the people and institutions of New York City.
